Here we are after a decent night of sleep, ready to tackle our first day of work! We still look rested at this point......ha! This is the three of us on the bench overlooking the creek. The mission center is enclosed by fence, and the missionaries have 6 rottweiler dogs to protect the place. We only saw three of the dogs while we were there, and they roamed around like kids. I snapped the second picture to give you an idea of what the people of the Dominican live like. This mother and her children are walking up stream to collect fresh water for the day. While there, we saw many women carrying jugs on their head and lots of children collecting for their families. I'll have some other pictures later of this process, but thought you would enjoy this now, since it's what we woke up to our first day. The water there is not safe. We were at the mercy of the missionaries to provide clean water for us everyday. Luckily, the water at the mission house was filtered, so we could shower and brush our teeth without worry. Although fairly clean, the mission house never did have warm water for the shower (at least that was my experience....a few women said they managed to get warm water one day, but I was not a lucky one), and, because everything is done by septic tank, no flushing anything in the toilets...it all had to go in the trash can. I think this was probably one of the reasons the smell of sewage was so strong in the villages we visited.
Another picture of Bleu and Bay. Ready for their first day of fun!
